The Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity and religious tolerance shifted in the Roman Empire. At that time, there were several groups of Christians with different ideas about how to interpret scripture and the role of the church. In A.D. 313 when Constantine lifted the ban on Christianity with the Edict of Milan. He tried to unify Christianity and resolve issues that divided the church by establishing the Nicene Creed. Many scholars believe Constantine’s conversion was a turning point in Christian history. Those who were following Jesus were no longer persecuted prior to Constantine’s movement, but they did face internal persecution for not integrating with the new formed religion called Christianity. Many teachings that were now becoming common doctrine did not align with the teachings of Jesus. Now, all one had to do to be a Christian was to submit to the Christian guidelines and they would be accepted as Christians. Christians did not have to follow Jesus or His teachings, because becoming a “Christian” is all that was needed to gain eternal life.
